This blog is a record of my learning and development towards a BA(Hons) Textiles degree with The Open College of the Arts.
It covers the module “Textiles 1: Exploring Ideas”, which is part of level 1 studies. Previously, I have studied “Textiles 1: A Creative Approach” which is covered in a different blog (please see “Links” page).
Before studying, I enjoyed hand appliqué, knitting, spinning, crochet, dressmaking, curtain making and soft furnishings as a hobby. Although I touched on creative expression with my hand appliqué, but never felt I was exploiting it’s full potential. I have a degree in Biology/Mathematics and worked for many years as a project manager in the defence industry. Now bringing up a family and a break from work has given me the opportunity to study the subject which I love: Textiles.
Since studying with the OCA I have started to learn how to draw and have become much more expressive with mark making. I have learnt new skills of linocut, block printing, dyeing, tapestry and weaving. Perhaps more importantly, I am learning the process for taking ideas, exploring and developing into textile pieces.
I hope that this new module will extend my learning and development and provide me with yet further opportunities for visual expression.
